SUPPORTING THE ANGLESEY MARATHON

We are pleased to announce that both Mencap Cymru and North West Cancer Research Fund Institute will be official charities of the 2007 Anglesey Marathon

Mencap Cymru is the leading charity working with children and adults with a learning disability, their families and carers in Wales. About 1.5 million people in the UK have a learning disability.

In Wales, there are over 60,000 people with a learning disability, of which only 13,000 are known to local social services departments. This number is growing because people with a learning disability are living longer and doctors are better at saving babies with severe disabilities.

What is a learning disability?
A learning disability affects someone's intellectual and social development throughout their life. This means that someone with a learning disability finds it harder than other people to learn, understand and communicate

Mencap Cymru's work?
In the last 60 years there have been a lot of changes in the lives of people with a learning disability. But the facts show that people with a learning disability still don't get the same rights or chances in life as other people. Mencap Cymru is here to change this. We know that every person with a learning disability can make choices about how they want to live if they get the right support. We fight to end discrimination and prejudice, and provide a wide range of quality services such as the Pathway Employment Service which supports people with a learning disability into work by supported employment and work preparation. We also have Housing, Care and Support Services with over 20 housing and supported living schemes across Wales supporting adults with a learning disability and offering support to children and young people in their own homes.

Money raised in Wales, is spent in Wales

North West Cancer Research Fund Institute

More than 18,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year in Wales, giving an incidence rate that is significantly higher than the average within the U.K. The NWCRF Institute was opened in 2004 at the University of Wales, Bangor, following a major financial donation from the North West Cancer Research Fund charity.

The NWCRF Institute is a centre for world class research, dedicated to finding the fundamental causes of cancer. It is the only centre of its kind in North Wales and houses 23 highly skilled scientists.

Your donation will make a difference in helping us to continue the fight against cancer in North Wales.
